Why does discrimination occur in Organization? There is numerous description for these issues. It can be classified by non-rational differences, lack of divergence in guidance, absence of good behavior in workplace and many other reasons. Is it really necessary to have some laws or rules to protect people from discrimination in workplace? Answer is yes. Discrimination in the workplace is not limited to just one thing; in fact, it is find in many ways. Such as, direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, victimization (Philips,2013, p. 65). In a society where large proportion workforce is made up for women, to include mothers, the pregnancy discrimination is very important. Although there are laws that protect employees and employers against discrimination such as Equality Act(Philips,2013).
However, until the 1960’s women were faced severe discrimination when trying to enter and maintain a position in the workplace. Often qualified women would be passed over for men with less experience and education. Employers were fearful that women were too emotional and were not provided to manage the stress in the work place. Also urging the ruling to not hiring or promote women was the matter over the healthcare expenses and on the time of pregnancy leave would require. Employers are restricted under the pregnancy discrimination act from execute special methods to figure an employee’s caliber at workforce. The path to equal behavior towards the women in work environment would start with the passage of Civil Rights Act of 1964, specifically the portion entitled Title VII.While Title VII offered women some extension against discrimination in the work place the enigma of the law would prevent safety on one key area: Pregnancy. The Act that would be vanish the final prejudiced blockade to women in the workplace would come in the passage of pregnancy discrimination act of 1978.Pregnancy in the workplace is a fundamental humans right issue of equality of opportunity between women and men.
