Unit 1 Assessment
Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
1. Understand the principles of developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults
Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults.
A child will learn more effectively when they feel relaxed, secure and confident, so being with someone they feel they have a good relationship with will create a positive atmosphere for them to learn in. It’s really important for us as adults to be able talk and listen to them as encouraging a child to talk will help them gain good language skills, extend their thinking and advance their learning and understanding.
As with children, young people will also learn more effectively when they feel they are in a safe, relaxed atmosphere and have a good relationship with someone they feel they can trust. Young people need to feel that their opinions count and that they are not only being listened to but understood. Being able to communicate effectively with young people will also help develop their confidence and communication skills as they progress into adulthood.
Effective communication with adults is just as important as it is with children and young people. Communication with each other helps us share and gain information with one another. Developing positive relationships with adults is important for team building with not only work colleagues but also with pupils’ parents, this will help to maintain a positive learning environment that will benefit pupils, parents and staff. It can also act as a great example to pupils by showing them how to behave towards each other.
To be able to communicate effectively we need to be able to listen to each other, by not listening to each other it can cause a breakdown in communication which can lead to a breakdown in relationships.
