The African American community’s future appears to be one going up and down but full of promise. Barak Obama is currently the president of the United States of America who happens to be African American, he is achieving status, career triumph and international political renown in a way that was once believed to be impossible by African-American people in 60’s. The Civil rights movement was culturally and politically displayed inequality by society and consciously by Blacks themselves. Barak Obama having lived a shared history of oppression is showing a better side to the black communities. Now, equality and diversity are seen as the American way, its right and moral ways are making things possible again, but opportunities are made available and equal right and reaped by todays generation.

Oprah is the founder of OWN Network in California, I choose this company to work for because, I like her vision, purpose and her overall leadership. My plan is to apply for her Internship program to gain experience and possible employment. Oprah Winfrey are because of her different traits, that were characteristic of persistence, belief in themselves, and the will to survive. Winfrey came from homes that were not functional and grew up in poverty. Oprah Winfrey, a Black woman born in poverty, sexually abused as a child, and raised in one of the most racist states in America (Mississippi) was able to overcome overwhelming odds to become the richest and most successful Black woman in America’s history. She was able to do this despite or perhaps because of her tough childhood her visionary leadership that has transformed the industry that she has dominated for over two decades. Oprah Winfrey can be described as a transformational leader who also has servant leadership traits because of her down-to-earth style and easygoing nature she engages as well as how she handles business transactions and dealings.

Oprah’s Talk show allows Oprah to reach out to her fans daily. It helps her to build a closer connection with the audience and talk to the viewers directly. She features a lot of the spiritual teachers who beliefs she discusses regularly on her talk show and uses it to introduce new books to the audience. She discusses women issue like weight, health and fitness, relationships, as well as spiritual development (Mburu, 2014). Winfrey is someone who has integrity, which is practiced in her business dealings, personal life and her motivation of others, because of her tough childhood, she remains true to herself and humbling roots despite being one of the richest women in the world. She practices ethical behavior every day, she focused on changing the way people think, and the way they feel about their lives. There are many other celebrities who have followed Oprah’s footsteps, but have not as successful as she is, or may not have longevity in the business as Oprah has (Mburu, 2014).

Oprah founded Rachael Ray by expanding her skills, she is an example, her story is dynamic as well. Rachel worked at a grocery store, she was offered a spot on the Food Network after being aired on a local news station. During the newscast, Rachael demonstrated how to prepare a great meal in 30 minutes or less. Since then, Rachael Ray has a successful career with the Food Network, she is traveling around the world sharing fabulous recipes with others. Rachael Ray also has a daytime talk show, cookbooks and a cookware and accessory line.

Oprah’s purpose statement is “To be a teacher and to be known for inspiring others and students to be more than they thought they could be, her legendary humility, Oprah communicates her purpose to be more of a personal journey; with goals she is still has to achieve, she wants to put herself and others in forward-thinking mode (Hom, 2013). Our community is a place where people can try to live their best lives, achieve growth personally and to obtain positive, thoughtful dialogue with each other. Oprah Winfrey stated: “I am guided by the vision of what I believe this show can be,” Oprah said in the mission statement. “Originally our goal was to uplift, enlighten, encourage and entertain each other through medium of television. Now, our mission statement for OWN Network is to use television to transform people’s lives, to make viewers see themselves differently and to bring happiness and a sense of fulfillment into every home (Hom, 2013)”.
