This research discusses the role mass transportation played in the United States: the different forms, how they began, their success and what happened to them. The first stagecoach in America went from New York to Philadelphia along the road known as the Kings Highway in 1756. The first regular runs went from Boston to New York and New York to Philadelphia. They went over post roads, which had regular stopping points, or posts. The Albany-New York Highway, or Post Road, was established in 1667, and the Boston Post Road from New York to Boston in 1673. A later post road which was critical to the settling of the Midwest was the Cumberland Road. While these roads are no longer used in the same way, many of the names survive.
