The River Tees is located in northern England and has a length of approximately 160 kilometres. Its source is on the eastern slope of Cross Fell and the mouth is the North Sea between Hartlepool and Redcar near Middlesbrough. The river rises on the slopes of Cross Fell at a staggering height of 893 metres. Around Cross Fell there are steep slopes, therefore, allowing the rain to trickle down quickly into the River Tees. As well as this, in spring and the summer, the snow melts and adds to the amount of water in the River. However, the downside to this is that flooding is a major issue especially down the lower course of the river where the water builds up. There have been multiple recorded cases of flooding, one being on the 16/17th November where the River Tees had burst through its banks and flooded multiple areas where the Tees flows through. Yarm was the worst affected though with the High Street being inundated in around 20 feet of water. This was caused because of an unanticipated thaw of ice in Upper Teesdale, and an unfortunate cloud burst in the Pennines.
