Othello Compared

Compares and contrasts William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, Othello, to the modern-day film version.

Exxon- Mobil released a film version of William Shakespeare’s classic play “Othello” in which the characterization and the action of the play was placed in British society during the modern day. Through using this setting as its backdrop, it can be seen that the events that occurred in Shakespeare’s play are as prominent in a modern context as they were when Shakespeare first presented them almost five centuries ago. This paper demonstrates how Shakespeare’s initial presentation of conflict as driven through basic human emotions makes Othello vulnerable to Iago’s manipulations.
