Mexican-American Stereotyping

This paper discusses that the stereotyped assumptions about Mexican-American and Chicanos, are a result of poverty rather than ethnic differences.

It will be the purpose of this research to examine the diverse and varied factors which affect the Mexican-American. The Mexican-American is unique from both the mother culture, Mexico, and the dominant culture, the Anglo-American. Color, language, and socio-economic class are also contributing factors. The Mexican-American’s psychological development and his socialization in the United States are results of these effects. This research will first examine the Anglo-American stereotypes of the Mexican-American and the contradiction between the Anglo images and expectations. These stereotypes will then be systematically negated by explaining false information, extenuating circumstances – such as poverty – and cultural differences.
