Keeping the Status Quo: The War with Iraq

Explores the truth behind the reasons given by the United States for declaring war on Iraq.

This paper discusses the reasons given by the Bush Administration for going to war with Iraq and argues that it is the same as the British Empire overthrowing the Boers in 1899. The paper contends that the real reason for both actions was and is not the protection of ideals but the protection of resources; the paper argues that the United States and European powers have always dominated populations with less “education”, technological advancements and cultural clout. The paper asserts that the Middle East seems to be the last colonial frontier for the richest countries in the world to stay the richest countries in the world at the expense of everyone else.
“In 1899 British troops went to defend the Empire against insurrection from the Boers (Afrikaners) in South Africa. People around the world were in shock. “Imperialists in Britain and its colonies of settlement believed the very essence of British strength to be at stake” (Lowry). ” Although everyone thought it would be a brief conflict, three years and a half million men later finally won but only after burning farms and creating concentration camps for the Boers. All in front of the eyes of the world who were getting daily reports through the telegraph which revealed that the British Army was degenerate as the Empire it was defending. But it didn’t matter to the Empire all that mattered was keeping a status quo so all resources continued to flow out Africa into the Empire. Keeping the Status Quo was very important. In 2003 America plans to invade Iraq to defend against terrorism from Saddam Hussein and protect our freedom from another attack. Most Americans are convinced that this is the right thing to do because the very essence of liberty is at stake. The Americans will no doubt be victorious but at what price to the Iraq and the rest of the world. It really does not matter to the United States government, just keeping the Status Quo of oil resources flowing in the direction of the most powerful nation in the world.”
