Gender and Work

Looking at the personal stories of two women and how attitudes towards women in the workplace has changed over the years.

This is an essay based on interviews with two individuals of different generations concerning work history. Discussed are the changing roles of women in the workplace in industrialized and post-industrialized American society within historical context.
“The following interviews were conducted with two women of two generations, mother and daughter. Molly is in her mid-fifties, divorced and works at a local garden center. Her daughter, Kathy, an aspiring artist, is in her mid-twenties, single and works as a bartender at a local franchised Mexican restaurant. They live outside a major metropolitan city, share a rental house, and one car. Their personal life histories, as well as their work histories, are quite different.”
