Diverted Violence

An interpretation of Ann Petry’s short story, Like a Winding Sheet, with the focus on the similarities to slavery.

This essay is an analysis of diverted violence. Using the story, Like a Winding Sheet, by Ann Petry, the paper touches on the similarities of historical and modern slavery, which the main character in the story has to deal with. It discusses how society transforms gentle black men into men of rage.
In conclusion, the black man never feels rested from the discrimination he receives at work, in public, and in his own home. In the end, the only way left for him to deal with his anger of inequality is resorting to violence. He can’t beat up a white woman, as he would be punished by society, so he resorts to beating his wife as the only way to receive rest and respect he can’t get otherwise from a white society.
