This paper traces transformation from early Theravada or Hinayana Buddhism in India to Mayayana tradition. The paper discusses various systems, philosophies and changes of Buddhism.

Mahayana was one of the results of the Great Schism between Elders and universal Assembly, which took place after Buddha’s death. The tradition of the Elders continues to this day in the school of Theravada while the other side included many schools all of which made a contribution to a new movement known as Mahayana. Mahayana means The Great Vehicle, as it is considered the universal way to salvation.
