A Person with Bipolar Disorder

An overview of the treatment and causes of bipolar disorder.

The paper reveals that bipolar affects approximately 2 million adults and the highs and lows are often difficult for family members and friends. The paper explains the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorders, its causes and its treatment. The paper argues that as a friend, co-student or relative, it is necessary to know the signs, symptoms, causes and treatments of bipolar disorder, because it is an incurable illness.
“A person with bipolar illness will have severe mood strings, highs and lows. These highs and lows are not something that the individual understands and controls. According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, “It is not a character flaw or a sign of personal weakness” (DBSA 2003, 1). The changing moods can last a few days or happen rapidly during the day. “Bipolar disorder affects more than two million Americans” (DBSAlliance 2003, 2). Men, women, children, minorities, ages, races, ethnic groups, and social classes often suffer from bipolar disorder. It is a brain disorder that is that leads to shifts in the individual’s moods. The illness is passed on through genetics to other family members. Like depression and other serious illnesses, bipolar disease can also negatively affect spouses and partners, family members, friends, and co-workers (co-students) (dbsaalliance 2003, 1).”
