This paper explores the role of sports development officers in the field of sports and as a source of motivation for athletes. The paper shows how the sports development workforce, in both the professional and voluntary sense, have a significant role to play in ensuring access to quality sporting opportunities throughout the community, for all age groups and all levels of ability. The paper explains how some shape policy, while others turn national and local policy into practice; the paper concludes that whatever their role, there has never been a greater need for a co-ordinated, planned and professional approach.
