Influential Works of Art

A look at how works of art have influenced future generations.

This paper discusses the influential works of art after the Renaissance and how they impact today’s cultures and values. The paper explores the movements of impressionism, cubism, and modernism and specifically looks at artists such as Pablo Picasso, Caude Monet and Jackson Pollock. The paper focuses on what these artists have contributed to modern day art.
One of the most important artistic works of art comes from the 19th century created by Monet in Sunrise (ARTonline 3). This work of art represents light on water with the spectator looking up at the sun. Although light was used it was not an overall brilliance. Monet used alternating patches of sunlight, resulting in light and dark effects. This was displayed at the first Impressionist Exhibition in 1874. The aim of Impressionism was to achieve naturalism by tone and color. The object was to render light on the surface of the objects. The flickering touch, with the paint applied in small, brightly colored dabs, and the lack of firm outline, combined with the brightness of the color, even in the shadows, and the generally high key undoubtedly alienated the public (ARTonline 1). The decade of Impressionism was 1870-1880 with artists such as Monet, Pissarro and Sisley. Degas, Renoir and Cezanne were Impressionists even in the 70’s but many did not like Cezanne. The Impressionists have affected most of the paintings of the last century with the suggestive need of light on the artwork. Perhaps the need of light in a dark age led to changes in the way the culture viewed life. Leading to the next works of art by Braque and Picasso.
