Curtailing College Sports Gambling

A proposal of how to better control college sports gambling.

The paper discusses the students who are betting on sporting events and the student athlete who shaves points to affect the outcome of the game for a kickback. The paper considers the ways to curtail college student betting and game fixing on sporting events and argues that the problem of college gambling is a serious issue that must be dealt with. The paper also points out that the real problem is an adult culture that has changed “gambling” into “gaming”.
“The university is a unique community unlike any in society. It has special procedures and goals of learning based on the highest standards. The highest ideal of the university is to educate a person to understand the world around him or her. The goal of the univerisity is to teach a person to see a problem from its many possible sides and to think critically in solving that problem.. The university, however, does not exist in a vacuum. It is assailed and influenced by many of the problems that exists in the lives of its students and the community : Alcoholism, drug abuse, unprotected sexual activity, and gambling. Because the university is involved in providing education through sport, two problems arise. First, it is the students who are betting on sporting events. Second it is the student athlete who shaves points to affect the outcome of the game for a kickback.”
