Consequences of Social Inequality

A discussion of social inequality and its consequences.

The paper discusses how millions of Americans, and billions of people around the world, suffer from social inequality. The paper addresses the health problems of children who are food deprived, the poor health of people with HIV and the problem of homelessness. The paper also discusses how minorities and women suffer the consequences of race and gender and are a cause of economic and environmental problems. The paper shows how there are are many areas of social inequality, all of which must be addressed to end all discrimination and assure a better quality of life for everyone.
“Every American knows that, despite what the Declaration of Independence says, all people might well be created equal, though not in terms of society. Blacks suffered through centuries of segregation, and are still lagging behind whites today in terms of job opportunities, pay, and respect. Women still do not earn the same pay for the same work as do men. There are also inequalities in the area of health for many Americans (Lang, 2001).
“There is much emphasis on health in our nation today, especially in the area of children’s health concerns. Lang (2001) reports that nutritionist-researchers at Cornell University and the University of Michigan conducted the first-ever national study to determine whether food deprivation affects a child’s health. The results were disturbing; a direct link between a child’s health and food intake was demonstrated (Lang, 2001).”
