In her essay “Mother Tongue” Amy Tan recalls “all the Englishes (that she) grew up with” and in what situations she uses them. All of these Englishes influenced her perception of the world and her own English. Tan very well makes the point across how people developed preconceived notions about her mother ‘s judgement based on how fluently she spoke English. Amy makes the reader understand how really not being American can affect how well someone can handle the everyday situation. This essay focuses on the partisanship of Amy and her mother. She talked about how her mother was treated and looked down because she does not speak proper English.
Amy uses different types of stances in order to portray the meaning of her essay.
