Career Advancement: An Argument for the Pursuit of an MBA
Career Advancement: An Argument for the Pursuit of an MBA
From a very young age many children in households across the world are taught that education is an instrument for future success. These theories regarding higher education are often associated with numerous studies that suggest that advanced education decreases the chance of lower socioeconomic status, poorer health statuses, increases marketability and career opportunities and aids in experiencing a sense of complete life fulfillment. Various scholars, philosophers, politicians and famous person??™s name education as responsible for their higher levels of success. ???Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation??? (John F. Kennedy). This week??™s assignment asks the student to support an argument on the decision to pursue an MBA degree to further a career, start a new career, or achieve a personal goal. In order to support the argument it is imperative to explore the motives that contributed to making the decision to pursue an advanced degree. The rationale for pursuing and advanced degree is quite simple; higher education affords those individuals who seek higher learning the ability to become stronger role models in their families and the community. Advanced degrees silently command professional respect and create the opportunity to earn higher than average salaries. Those who obtain higher levels of education are more likely to systematically solve complex problems in business and their personal lives and most importantly higher education affords the individual the feeling of self-worth as well as possessing a sense of accomplishment. In choosing a career path I found the most important issues were to choose a degree that would challenge my intellect and learning capabilities, create added opportunities for career advancement, and ultimately set the foundation for the lifestyle and expectations that I have for my children and myself. In the next paragraphs we will examine just how beneficial obtaining an MBA degree becomes when faced with career and life challenges. We will explore the pros of obtaining an MBA and address some common myths related to the business world.
At many universities the Master??™s of Business Administration degree programs focus on teaching their students the skills required to become effective leaders in the world of business. University of Phoenix MBA programs focuses on five key concepts in preparing their students for a gratifying career in business. The five concepts include the development of skillful communication, critical thinking competence for efficient problem-solving, the art of collaboration with others for optimal teamwork approach and development of networking relationships, the skill of conducting research in the preparation for negotiation and change and the application of strong ethical behaviors. An element of understanding the benefits of obtaining an MBA begins with the analysis and understanding of one??™s own personality type. Leadership and management are a phenomenon that like anything else in life it is not appropriate for everyone. It is widely believed that people who choose business as careers are often ruthless, manipulative, suit and tie wearing, numbers-oriented people who lack morals and ethics only concerned with padding their pockets and the bottom line. These stereotypes are often a result of the images portrayed on television and other media outlets. In an effort to assess what careers would most allow me to excel I completed the Jungian 16-type Personality test. This test is a 32 question questionnaire that evaluates one??™s personality strengths and weaknesses. The results of my personality tests suggests that I am ???outgoing, visionary, argumentative, have a low tolerance for incompetence, and often seen as a natural leader. Possible career as a manager, management trainer, stockbroker, lawyer, chemical engineer, and police officer??? (Marcic & Nutt, 1989). Certainly one has to have an in-depth understanding of his or her personality to ensure that these results are accurate and in my case the results were truthful. According to the former chairman and CEO of General Electric Company, Jack Welch states ???Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision and relentlessly drive it to completion.??? Welch also identifies integrity, dedication, magnanimity, openness, creativity, humility, fairness, assertiveness, and a good sense of humor as vital essentials in becoming a great leader.
When considering furthering one??™s education it is important to consider the impact that the degree being sought will have on the chosen career path. Personally my career desires are to have employment that I enjoy waking up to do, the ability to positively affect the lives of others, and a career that offers a sound financial plan for the attributes that I offer. As with any career the financial portion of the equation plays an important role as one may find difficulty in performing well for the company while stressed by challenges such as providing the basic necessities for their family. According to Davies and Cline ???the average student investing $162,000 in an MBA could expect total increased earnings of $1.4 million (in 2001 dollars) over the course of a career. That works out to a 17.6 percent real rate of return, or 2.6 percent more than in 1993. And this was despite a 50 percent increase in tuition. The two go on to explain Since 1970, graduates with professional degrees have experienced unemployment rates that are 25 percent less than those with undergraduate degrees, according to the Statistical Abstracts t)f the United States??? (Davies & Cline, 2005 p.1).
In conclusion, advanced education strongly improves ones chances of leading a more fulfilled life with added enhanced opportunities for successful growth. Education opens doors that lead to healthier professional and personal relationships and sets examples of great magnitude for children and adults alike. Monetary gains are not the only or the most important rewards associated with obtaining an MBA but offers the reward of being a respected voice in the community, the respect earned from your children, and the comforts of life that one may bequeath upon their family and makes earning an advanced degree one of life??™s paramount??™s.
